Hiking trails in the Sierra de Aitana

With its 1,558 metres of altitude, the Sierra de Aitana is the "ceiling" of the province of Alicante and a paradise for hiking. Penáguila is the perfect starting point to explore its trails.

Aitana: The hiker's paradise in Alicante

The contrast is surprising: just 40 kilometres from the beaches of the Costa Blanca rises the imposing Sierra de Aitana. Its rugged terrain, protected flora (micro-reserves) and spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea from its peaks make it a top destination for mountain lovers.

The best routes near Penáguila

Staying at Casa Inés you have immediate access to several routes without hardly moving the car. We highlight three of our favourites:

1. Route to Santa Llúcia Arch (Aladrach Ravine)

  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Approximate duration: 3-4 hours
  • Description: One of the most impressive landscapes in Penáguila. The route runs alongside the Aladrach ravine until reaching the famous "Arc de Santa Llúcia", a natural stone arch sculpted by wind and water over millennia. The views from up there are worth every step.

2. Ascent to Aitana Peak (Font de Partagat)

  • Difficulty: Medium-High
  • Approximate duration: 5-6 hours (circular)
  • Description: To tackle the summit (1,558 m), it is ideal to drive to Font de Partagat in the neighbouring village of Benifato. From there begins the mythical ascent passing through the "Pas de la Rabosa", a narrow cleft in the rock that adds a point of adventure. On clear days, you can see the island of Ibiza.

3. Route to Penáguila Castle

  • Difficulty: Easy-Medium
  • Approximate duration: 1.5 hours (round trip)
  • Description: A shorter hike but with elevation gain that starts from the village itself. It goes up to the ruins of the Muslim fortress from the 8th-13th centuries. Ideal at sunset to see how the sun turns the Frainos river valley red.

Respect for the environment: The Sierra de Aitana is fragile. Remember not to leave rubbish, respect the flora and always carry enough water and sun protection, as the springs may be dry depending on the season.

Casa Inés, the perfect refuge after the route

Nothing better after accumulating elevation than returning to a comfortable and cosy house.

  • A restorative shower: We have 2 complete bathrooms.
  • Relax by the fire: Light the living room fireplace, pour yourself a glass of wine and review the excursion photos.
  • Refuel: You have an equipped kitchen, and if you prefer to be served, the village restaurant (Ca Marieta) is just a few minutes' walk away.
