A piece of history in Penáguila
The Santos Garden is one of the most unique botanical and recreational spaces in the Valencian Community. It was built in the mid-19th century (around 1841) by Don Joaquín Rico y Soler, a local landowner who loved the arts and botany.
The original design mixes neoclassical style with the emerging romanticism of the era. Walking through its paths is like taking a trip back in time, discovering flowerbeds, fountains, and unique architectural elements.
What to see in the Santos Garden?
- The Maze: One of the main attractions, especially fun for those visiting the garden with children.
- Pond and fountains: Water is a central element in any romantic garden, and here it is present in a beautiful pond and several fountains distributed throughout the grounds.
- Botanical species: The garden is home to centuries-old trees and exotic plant species brought in during its creation, such as Lebanese cedars and magnolias.
- Unique architecture: Several pavilions, viewpoints, and artificial ruins (very fashionable in European romantic gardens) dot the path.
Curiosity: The garden reflects the personality of its creator, showcasing both his botanical and Masonic interests, with a design that invites contemplation and meditation.
The perfect visit
We recommend dedicating at least an hour to strolling quietly through the garden. It is an ideal place for photography, to read a book in the shade of a century-old tree, or simply to enjoy the silence broken only by the sound of water.
After the visit, you can take the opportunity to walk through the narrow streets of Penáguila, head over to see the Church of the Assumption, and recharge your batteries in one of the local restaurants.
