Sierra de Aitana: the roof of Alicante

At 1,558 metres, the Sierra de Aitana is the highest mountain range in the province of Alicante. A paradise for hiking, wild nature and views that on clear days reach the island of Ibiza.

Protected natural area

The great unknown of inland Alicante

Just 40 kilometres from the bustle of the Costa Blanca rises the imposing Sierra de Aitana, the highest peak in Alicante. Its highest point reaches 1,558 metres above sea level and its silhouette is recognisable from anywhere in the region. What many tourists don't know is that this mountain range houses some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Valencian Community: ravines carved by water, micro-reserves of endemic flora and natural viewpoints with views of the Mediterranean.

The mountain range extends between the regions of Comtat, Marina Baixa and Marina Alta, with Penáguila strategically located on its northern slope. This makes our village the perfect base for exploring its most emblematic corners.

Essential routes in Sierra de Aitana

The trail network is very well signposted and offers options for all levels. These are the ones we recommend most to our guests:

⛰️ Ascent to Aitana Peak (1,558 m)

  • Difficulty: Medium-High
  • Duration: 5-6 hours circular
  • Starting point: Font de Partagat (Benifato, 20 min from Casa Inés)
  • What you'll see: The mythical "Pas de la Rabosa", a narrow pass carved into the rock, and 360-degree panoramic views from the summit. On clear days you can see the island of Ibiza.

🏞️ Aladrach Ravine and Santa Llúcia Arch

  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Duration: 3-4 hours
  • Starting point: From Penáguila itself (on foot from Casa Inés)
  • What you'll see: An impressive natural stone arch sculpted by erosion, surrounded by lush riverside vegetation. One of the most photogenic excursions in the area.

🏯 Climb to Penáguila Castle

  • Difficulty: Easy-Medium
  • Duration: 1.5 hours round trip
  • Starting point: From the centre of Penáguila
  • What you'll see: The ruins of the Muslim fortress that dominated the Frainos river valley. Ideal at sunset.

Wildlife and flora of the Sierra de Aitana

The Sierra de Aitana is an area of high ecological value. Its slopes house micro-reserves of flora with endemic species found nowhere else in Europe. Among its wildlife stand out:

  • Birds of prey: Bonelli's eagle, peregrine falcon and eagle owl soar over its peaks.
  • Mammals: Iberian ibex, wild boar, fox and stone marten are common in the holm oak and pine forests.
  • Amphibians: The fire salamander and common frog inhabit the springs and ravines such as Font de Partagat or Barranc de l'Arc.

Juan's recommendation: Bring binoculars. The views from Pas de la Rabosa are spectacular, but birdwatching birds of prey from the peaks is one of the most memorable spectacles this mountain will offer you.

Viewpoints and points of interest

  • Penáguila viewpoint: From the old town, at sunset, the mountains are tinged with reddish and golden tones.
  • Font de Partagat: Recreational area at the foot of Aitana peak, with tables, spring and shade. Starting point for the ascent.
  • Puerto de Tudons: Pass between Aitana and Serra del Rentonar, with views of the Seta valley and the sea. Accessible by car.
  • Nevera de Penáguila: Ancient 18th-century snow deposit, a testament to the history of the mountains.
